The individuals of the Ebro Delta and the Mar Menor do not recover because they get parasitized or do not have the right environmental conditions
The Recupera Pinna project concludes that the massive mortality of the fan mussel in Alfacs Bay, in the Ebro Delta, is still due to the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae and other organisms like bacteria, that aggravate the disease.
The scientists of the project point out that to control the effect of the parasite, it would be necessary to bring more fresh water into the bay to lower the salinity.
In other places where Pinna nobilis escape the parasite, such as Fangar Bay and the Mar Menor (Murica), the environmental conditions are not optimal enough for the species to have a long life expectancy.
